Wake-up Call

One drawback to cooking in your hotel room is the ease with which one can set off the smoke alarm. It's always a great wake-up when someone smokes their breakfast and sets off all the room smoke alarms.
Usually they vent their room using the bathroom fan and the window, the front desk person confirms that their room isn't actually on fire, the alarms are shut off, and life goes on.
This morning, we had a newb who opened the door to vent their room. This let the smoke out into the hall--which set off the hall smoke alarms. Those won't shut down until the ENTIRE GORRAMMED HALL IS VENTED... and it ran long enough to summon the fire department before the front desk person could cancel it.
Thank you, I needed that wake-up, yes....
Item two: if, hypothetically, you are a programmer writing a small utility to change some system parameters/variables/files, the default operation given no arguments should NOT be "erase everything". Just saying...
