Being in SW fandom at the time of the first movie was like being a LOTR fan before the Silmarillion or the Appendices came out. No explanation or context.
We didn't know what a Dark Lord of the Sith was, except that Darth Vader was one. There was an Empire, but the Emperor was unknown. Anakin Skywalker was some pilot who was killed by Darth Vader during the Clone Wars. We didn't know what the Clone Wars were about or anything., just that they were in the past. Maybe they were a war against clones, or a war over their rights as sapient beings. We had no idea. I'm not sure Dark side vs Light side of the force was even mentioned.
