San Francisco and the Golden Gate, part 2

On the north shore of the bridge there's a recreational area, and next to the bridge, there's a park on Vista Point. It's well-named; the view is beautiful from up there, and all the tourists and protestors and cameramen filming the protestors seemed to agree. It was a very nice day, too. Finding a parking place was a bit hectic, but I finally managed to squeeze into one so I could get out and tour on foot.
Panorama of the northern bay from the north end of the bridge

That's Angel Island on the left, Alcatraz in the middle distance, and Treasure Island that the Bay bridge crosses. There will be a quiz later.
Lone Sailor Memorial

There's a memorial at Vista Point dedicated to the sailors of various services, with this bronze sculpture as the centerpiece. It's also a high point with a good view of the Bay and San Francisco.
Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island

Alcatraz is the nearer one with the fort--or rather, prison--on it. The Bay Bridge is not nearly as interesting as the Golden Gate bridge. It's a double-decker bridge, and the eastbound traffic goes on the bottom deck, so it's like driving in a tunnel above the bay. Boring. You can get a glimpse of how popular the area is with tourists.
San Francisco from the north shore

That's the Bay Bridge on the left, again. And more tourists. Picture taken while I was standing in the Sailor's Memorial.
Did I mention tourists?

Marina

There's a pretty little marina below Vista Point that can be seen from the bridge. In a future installment, I'll take a look at all the water-dwellers you can see frolicking in the Bay.
Old Lighthouse?

I don't know exactly what this is, but it's a ruin and it seems to guard the entrance to the Bay. It may have been a lighthouse, or even a gun emplacement.
Pillbox

This is on the western side of the north end of the bridge, up on the overlooking hills. At a wild guess, it may date from WWII, back during the Japanese invasion scares. It may be older.
The Golden Gate Bridge

Taken from Vista Point, this shows the length of the bridge.
