As you may guess, this follows right on from "Ghost in the Machine", where he's last seen tumbling out of control. There's something in his spec sheet about high-speed dives messing up his gyro-circuitry & causing temporary disorientation. So, Starscream's gyros may be prone to "tumbling" with certain violent, high-G maneuvers (like being blasted away from Unicron's head). In deep space, you don't have gravity or a hard stop with the ground to re-orient yourself, and Screamer is prone to panic when he finds himself in out-of-control or life-threatening situations. If you notice, his situation is entirely due to panic, and he would have eventually pulled out of it himself when he calmed down.

Being skilled in atmospheric flight does not make you a master of zero-G maneuvers. In fact, the instincts/reflexes/skills of one are quite counter-productive in the other environment. Starscream can fly in deep space, but he's never seemed real happy about it. I get the impression Skyfire is more of the deep space guy.

(Historical note: we almost lost one of the early Mercury or Gemini missions due to an out-of-control tumble like I put Starscream in.)
