Last weekend, I drove up to San Mateo to hang out with online friend Ravyn at YaoiCon, where she was one of the Con Operations co-chairmen. We had quite a bit of fun, and she turned out to be every bit as delightful in person as online.

YaoiCon is a convention for fans of Yaoi - Japanese Anime, Manga and Doujinshii featuring sexy guys that appeal to romance-loving female fans. (Sanitized version) Like most sci-fi/fantasy fan conventions, it had a lot of people running around in costumes, mostly anime characters; dealer rooms where you could buy neat stuff related to the Con theme; an art show; a film festival; and various events and contests, such as costume contests, auctions, etc.

Ravyn got to spend most of the con holding down the Con Operations room and dealing with one crisis after another. Con Ops are the guys who organize the Con, run interference between various Con people and the hotel staff, and serve as the help desk/lost & found/etc for con attendees. At any given moment, Ravyn might be calling the hotel staff to ask for more chairs for a given event, telling the anxious person running the event that the chairs were on their way, checking to see if someone's lost ID badge had been turned in, figuring out where the special gifts for panel guests were, etc, etc, etc. I helped Ravyn out some, mostly by running back and forth to get stuff when she was nailed to the floor in Con Ops doing her duties.

Sign-up for certain con events was big enough that it had to be held outside in the courtyard to accomodate all the people who wanted to attend.

People came in all sorts of costumes

I have no idea what these people are supposed to be...

Spot the anime hair...

Is that Kogura the Wind Sorceress back there?

Don't know who she is, but that's a spiffy hat

More anime hair!

Some people I can't tell costume from normal Con-going clothes..

Naruto and Alucard?

It was a very nice hotel, set up for business conventions. They charged accordingly, and found ways to nick fees for everything. But the floors were pretty. Things were just as busy inside as outside...

The women's restroom had a lot more "character" than they usually do...

This last picture was taken at a diner called the Peninsula Grill in San Mateo. It was in walking distance of the convention, cheap, and the food was good. Definitely a winner, and they did a land-rush business during the con.
