As previously recounted, I detoured through the Petrified Forest National Park. (Map). One of the stops was the ruins of Puerco Pueblo. Here's yet more pictures of the place.

To quote from the plaque:

Puerco Pueblo stood one story high with two to three rows of connected rooms surrounding a central plaza. The village, inhabited from about A.D. 1250 to the late 1300s, housed a number of families. The nearby river provided water that nourished plant and animal life necessary for this pueblo community....

Referring to the map, Puerco Pueblo is right in the middle, on the main park road south of I-40 and the railroad.

I'd like to point out that the desert around there is typical: cluttered with green stuff. Contrary to popular myth, most desert is not barren sand. This dry scrubby look like an abandoned lot is far more common. Even the Mojave wasn't barren, except on salt flats or lava beds. Curiously, the Petrified Forest area had some of the rare completely barren desert land--more on that later.

Next: Pictures of all the petroglyphs at Puerco Pueblo (that I could see).
