Plagiarism
Aug. 5th, 2006 10:20 amImitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but somehow I'm not flattered when someone takes one of my stories and re-posts it under his own name with a different title. And screws up the chaptering and formatting while he/she/it is at it.
One of my readers sent me a very helpful note with a link pointing me at the plagiarised story: some idiot had taken the first few chapters of Raditz's Return and re-posted it under his own handle and with a different title. After stripping off the copyright notices and author's notes, of course. Fortunately for me, my stories are well enough known (by Raditz fans, at least), that the first few reviewers recognized it right away and said as much in their reviews. I reported the thing for plagiarism, and said as much in a review. Bleh.
If any of you come across a story that you know is plagiarised, feel free to report it, and let the original author know, if you can. FF.net allows anyone to report plagiarism, but most websites are legally required to act only if the original copyright holder issues the complaint. If you are curious as to how far your own stories have spread, Google on key unique names or phrases in your story to see where they turn up. (So long as the phrase isn't "She experienced pure, untamed erotica and enjoyed every minute of it".... ) I'm generally okay with re-distribution of my stories as long as the attribution, credits and formatting are maintained. I'm not okay with re-distribution of art on my website, because all of it is being used by permission from the original artists--who gave me permission to use it, not all and sundry.
So, why plagiarise a story that is so well known in the fandom (DBZ) that every reader who is interested in that character (Raditz) will recognize it instantly? Is this 'teh stupid' or what? And have you ever had this happen?

Date: 2006-08-06 09:23 am (UTC)Unfortunately, I am very familiarized with thiefs. Do you remember this pic of mine I did for you?

Any time ago, I found out somebody on DeviantArt had got this picture, and she altered it puting some short of C.18 charactere like as a Mary Sue girl next to Raditz, and Goten was turned into a child of they both... The result was shamefull but it still being a copy of my picture; the girl got a big lecture from me, and eventually she removed it.
I wonder what kind of morons they're.
Your little trick for finding out plagied stories sounds good. I'm not that afraid of my stories copies, but my pics, though.

Date: 2007-08-29 01:18 am (UTC)Ten year-olds aren't supposed to be posting to FanFiction.net without parental supervision, if FF.net even allows posting under 13, because they can get in just this sort of trouble. Young children haven't been taught that some kinds of behavior aren't acceptable on the Internet.
Copying someone else's story or art or homework or anything else and saying it's yours is just plain wrong.
