Cobraaaa!
Last night, I watched some of the classic Sunbow GI Joe episodes for the first time. "Arise, Serpentor, Arise!" and the following episode. I tried watching the movie, but the YouTube versions were over-compressed and too poor a quality to enjoy.
My main impression: COBRA = what the Decepticons would look like if Starscream were in charge. (And human). It was really, really weird hearing Starscream's voice from Cobra Commander.... then I gradually realized that not only does Cobra Commander share a voice actor and The Voice with G1 Starscream, he shares a personality! Cobra Commander is Starscream in human form (well, mysterious humanoid in full-body suit and face-mask form). Same erratic, insane brilliance, short temper, mercurial personality, tendency to hysterically blame everyone else when things go wrong, manipulative, 'cowardly', flashes of tactical and strategic brilliance. (CC is more strategically aware than Serpentor: "Of course you can invade Washington DC. You just can't hold it. I know; I've tried.")
(Sulky CC sounds so much like sulky Starscream!)
Cobra Commander is, until Serpentor comes along, in charge. He has the same lousy personnel skills as Starscream: he's good at manipulating people he wants something from, but deals poorly with people who depend on/want something from/work for him. His subordinates despise him. So, COBRA is a model for the Decepticons if Starscream had taken over and stayed in charge. Did I mention that his subordinates despise him?MegatronSerpentor was created by a united effort of Starscream's Cobra Commander's subordinates to literally design a better leader than StarscreamCobra Commander.
The relationship between CC and Serpentor is a lot like that of Starscream and Megatron, except that the Ubermensch Serpentor isn't nearly as smart as Megatron. Also, Cobra Commander doesn't seem to have as many squeeing fangirls as Starscream, possibly because he started out in charge.
I'll be watching more GI Joe as I find it. It's fun!
