Worked from home so I could take care of some banking stuff. Elsa (our dog) is not doing well today; she's barely eating and I think is feverish. This is semi-nexpected; she's being treated for heartworm, and heartworm treatment is as brutal as chemotherapy. I was surprised when she took the ball of liverwurst I normally put her pill in, and, instead of eating it, buried it in the backyard. Then she went and dug it up, and I think, ate it. I hope she did, she needs the prednisone for the side-effects. (Apparently when heartworms die, the disintegrating carcasses lodge in the lungs and cause inflammation.) I also understand why people put down dogs with severe heartworm--the treatment is hard on the dog, and would probably kill an elderly dog, and if there's already severe damage to liver and heart, pointless; and it's expensive. If you're poor, and just can't afford it, it's better to put the dog to sleep than watch it slowly die of heartworms.
There's a really awesome rant by some guy named Jonathan Pie on FaceBook [cw: Brit swears like a sailor]:

He makes the point I've been trying to make to left-wing blog commenters for years. If you dismiss people who don't agree with you as "racist/sexist/etc evil" and shout them down instead of talking to them, they're not going to ever come over to your point-of-view. Making unnecessary enemies is stupid. If you bully me, abuse me, and generally treat me as your enemy, I'm not going to say "Oh, you are so right about X, I see the error of my ways". No, I am going to think "You're my enemy, I don't care what you think or about your cause, and I really don't care how you think I should vote."
I thought of an example that hits home with me personally: young knuckleheads on some blogs blaming "all Baby Boomers" for their poor job prospects, their student loan debt, the U.S.'s questionable foreign policy history, racism, sexism, the Bush Years, etc--and explicitly saying "Baby Boomers just need to die". Gee, I'm a Baby Boomer. I sure the HELL don't want you voting on senior health care policies, or anyone you'd vote in doing so. Also, I lost all sympathy for someone who collectively wishes that I, their parents, their grandparents, and everyone their elders know, would just "go away and die". Yeah, the Nazis had that attitude about the elderly, too. Is it okay if I punch you in the face, too?
On a more calming note: Stardew Valley continues to chug along. Also, I got on Cybertron (Minecraft server) for the first time in a while last night, and found out that my automated tree farm had filled the barrels of saplings and was spilling stuff all over the floor because it had nowhere to go. That, and the charcoal processing had filled up the charcoal storage and was also spilling all over the floor. WTF? I didn't think my base was chunk-loaded; I never built a chunk loader. Either I'm close enough to spawn to stay permanently chunk-loaded (I shouldn't be), or the Railcraft coke oven chunk-loads itself, which is possible. (Nothing in the web indicates this to be the case--it's possible I just have enough stuff cycling in pipes between chunks to act as a poor man's chunkloader).
Anyway, I shut off the tree farm this morning after allowing it to partially fill the wood barrel, and cleaning up the mess (void to Trash Can for sapling overflow, make bigger storage for charcoal fuel). I'm really glad I didn't leave the crop farms running unattended... on the other hand, I had better check my apple trees. They were left running.
Started reading another Lt Eve Dallas book--I've got a stack of them, and I'm reading the series in order whenever I'm in the mood for a cyberpunk police procedural romance. For those who aren't familiar with them, "J. D. Robb" is a pseudonym of romance novelist Nora Roberts, and she is a hell of a writer and storyteller. Classy lady, too, in the times I've observed her commenting online at Smart Bitches. I want to be like her when I grow up. Yes, she can write cyberpunk and police procedurals. We already knew she could write good, sexy romances. The Eve Dallas stories are also, I've heard, Nora Roberts proving that it is possible to write romance within marriage--I hear she got tired of the notion that romance ends when the couple get married. (Lt. Dallas and Roarke have been married since Book 2 or 3 in the series). Also, if you're familiar with the series, who would you cast as Roarke? In my head, he's based on Pierce Brosnan back when he was doing "Remington Steele", only with longer hair.
